HOW TO READ THE MICROMETER ON THE EASY SEATER STRAIGHT LINE SEATING DIE


The micrometer top of the EASY SEATER die is threaded into its die body with 20 threads per inch. This means that every time the top is turned exactly one turn it will move axially exactly 1/20 of one inch or 0.050 inches. The top is graduated around its circumference with 50 equally spaced marks. Turning the top from on mark to the next moves the top axially 1/50th of 0.050 or one one-thousandth of one inch. Turning the top five marks moves the top, and the seating stem which is attached, five one-thousandths of one inch. Turning the top forty-two marks clockwise, say from 16, which would be one mark past the “15” mark to 8 which would be three marks past the “5” will lower the seating stem 0.042 inches. (16+42=58 less 50 for going past “0” leaves 8)

The Die body is graduated with marks every 0.050 inches. Turning the top clockwise exactly one turn moves the top down exactly 0.050 inches. Turn the top until the “0” on the top aligns with the longitudinal index line of the scale on the die body as near as possible to the “0”. The edge of the top may be just a little above or below the “0” line on the body but it will maintain this same relationship as it moves up and down the scale. Turn the top exactly one full turn clockwise and the edge of the top will move from the “0” line on the body to the next line down. Exactly one more turn will move to the “1” line on the body and the seating stem will have moved 0.100 inches. Continue turning the top until the “20” mark lines up with the index line. Since we started at the “0” mark we have now turned two full turns which lowered the seating stem 2 x 0.050 or 0.100 inches plus another 0.020 inches for a total of 0.120. Turning the top three more marks will bring our total movement to 0.050 + 0.050 + 0.020 + 0.003 = 0.123 inches.

As an exercise, assume that you try seating a bullet in the case with the top turned down so that the edge of the top is between the “4” mark on the body and the un-numbered mark between “4” and “5”. Our reading will be some where in the range between 0.400 and 0.450. To determine where we are at in this range note which mark on the circumference of the cap lines up with the index mark on the body. Say the index line is three marks past “15” and two marks before “20”. Read this either as 0.015 + 0.003 = 0.018 or 0.020 – 0.002 = 0.018. Either way we are 0.018 inches past 0.400. Our reading is “0.418”.

Now assume that we determine that we need to seat the bullet 0.156 inches deeper into the case. 0.418 + 0.156 = 0.574. We must move the three full turns plus six marks. 0.156 / 0.050 = 3 remainder 0.006. Turn the cap so that the “18” mark comes around to the index line three times and then turn six marks more to the “24” mark or one mark before the “25”. The edge of the cap should be half way between the un-numbered line between “5” and “6” (0.550) and the “6” line (0.600). So the reading to record is 0.550 + 0.024 = 0.574.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR SETTING UP AND USING THE
EASY SEATER 
STRAIGHT LINE SEATING DIE

THANK YOU for purchasing the EASY SEATER straight line seating die. You will find that this die is a little different than other seating dies you may have used.  
1. Bullets are put into the die through a window in the side of the die rather than through the bottom.  
2. The die is made to work with all cartridges of a particular bullet diameter rather than with a specific cartridge.  
3. Because of the need to balance the height of the window opening with the length of the bullet and the length of the cartridge, the die set-up procedure is a little different than with other dies.

ADJUSTING THE DIE
To adjust the die for a cartridge that it has not been used for before:
With the reloading press ram at the top of its stroke, screw the assembled die into the reloading press until the bottom of the die window is level with the top of the lock ring as the lock ring seats against the top of the press frame. Next, back the die out of the press some portion of one turn so that the window in the side of the die is pointed conveniently toward you. Lightly screw the lock ring against the top of the press to temporarily hold the die in place. Back the micrometer top out until the bottom end of the seating stem is slightly above the top of the die window. Lower the ram and put a cartridge case into the shell holder. Raise the press ram slowly. As the case neck contacts the shoulder inside the guide sleeve, the sleeve will begin to rise. You should be able to raise the ram to the top of its stroke without meeting any resistance from the die sleeve. When setting up for very long cartridge cases, the sleeve may run out of travel before the ram reaches the top of its stroke. If this happens, screw the die body out of the press until the ram can come to the top of its travel. With the die body set, lower the ram and Screw the micrometer top down until the seating stem just touches the bullet. Lower the press ram. Slip a bullet into the die window and hold it with your thumb. Slowly raise the ram again. As the guide sleeve begins to rise, move your thumb out of the way and continue to raise the ram to the top of its stroke. If you know the seating depth you want, screw the micrometer top down that amount less a little for error. Replace the bullet in the window again if it has not balanced on top of the case neck. Now raise the ram again releasing the bullet as the sleeve begins to move. Continue raising the ram to the top of its stroke. With a little luck, the ram will reach the top of its stroke before the bullet touches the seating stem. Screw the micrometer head down until the seating stem just touches the ogive of the bullet as its base rests against the mouth of the case. Lower the ram and screw the micrometer top down by the amount of the desired seating depth. Raise the ram and seat the bullet. Lower the ram, remove the cartridge, measure the cartridge overall length and adjust the micrometer top to compensate for any error as necessary. Record the micrometer setting and the amount that the die body was backed off for future reference.  

When seating long bullets into short cases you may encounter a problem if the seating stem must be screwed down so far that the bullet will no longer fit into the window under the seating stem. You may find it necessary to remove the die locking ring. Under these circumstances, screw the die down into the press threads a few turns and screw the micrometer top up until a workable combination is found. One turn of the die body threads will require a 0.071 inch change in the micrometer top. Under extreme circumstances, a custom length seating stem can be ordered.
 
USING THE DIE
Be sure that the correct guide sleeve and seating stem for the bullet diameter that you are using is installed in the outer die body. The caliber is stamped on the front of the sleeve just below the window. Push the inner guide sleeve up with your finger until the numbers appear in the window. Put one of the bullets you intend to load through the die window. It should not be able to have any noticeable side to side movement and it should slide easily down through the die with little force. Adjust the die for the desired seating depth or over all cartridge length desired. See the instructions for “Adjusting the die” above.

Prepare a charged case following excepted safe reloading procedures. Consult a published reloading manual. If you have never handloaded ammunition, and even if you have, we recommend that you buy and read carefully one of the comprehensive books on handloading such as Metallic Cartridge Reloading, by M.L. McPherson (order at 970-564-0500) or one of the handloading manuals by Speer, Sierra, or Hornady. All of them contain detailed instructions for safely reloading accurate ammunition. Because of the design of the EASY SEATER die, you will probably find that it is not necessary to bell the mouth of the case. Expand the case and be sure that there is a uniform chamfer inside the case mouth and then continue with the loading procedure.  

Slip a bullet into the die window and hold it with your thumb. Begin to raise the press ram. The case neck will contact a shoulder inside of the guide sleeve and the sleeve will begin to rise. Release the bullet, move your thumb out of the way and continue to raise the press ram. The case mouth will contact the bullet base and raise the bullet until its nose contacts the seating stem. Continue to raise the ram seating the bullet into the case mouth. After the ram has reached the top of its stroke, lower the ram and the sleeve will follow the case back down.

CHANGING DIE INSERTS

To change the INNER GUIDE SLEEVE and SEATING STEM, screw the micrometer top counter clock wise until it can be removed from the die. Insert a 3/32 hex wrench through the hole near the top of the seating stem and use the rod as a wrench to loosen the rod from the micrometer top. Screw the rod out of the top and replace it with one of the correct caliber. Snug the new seating stem against the top.  

Use a 3/32 hex wrench to loosen the socket set screw on the back of the die far enough that inner guide sleeve and spring can be pushed out the bottom of the die with a pencil or some such thing. These parts will probably just fall out once the set screw is loosened enough.  

Clean all parts with a rust preventative bore cleaner or lubricant like Hoppies No. 9 or WD-40. A little molybdenum-disulfide grease or case lube spread in the die body bore and over the outside of the inner sleeve will help keep the die working smoothly.

Insert the inner guide sleeve for the new caliber into the die body so that the end that the window is closest to is up. Align the slot in the back of the guide sleeve under the socket set screw and carefully screw the set screw in so that the sleeve can slide up and down but can not turn or fall out. DO NOT TIGHTEN THE SET SCREW. GENTLY BOTTOM THE SET SCREW IN THE SLOT AND THEN BACK IT OUT 1/6 TURN. The sleeve must move up and down freely.

Drop the spring back into the die body on top of the guide sleeve and screw the micrometer top/seating stem assembly back into the top of the die body. Follow the instructions for “adjusting the die” above.  

          Instructions for using your 
              RAM EXTENSION
                      with your
  EASY SEATER STRAIGHT LINE SEATING DIE
   

Because the bullet is inserted into the Easy Seater Straight Line Seating Die above the press frame, you may sometimes find that once you have adjusted the seating stem down to give the correct seating depth, you can no longer get the bullet into the die window. This situation occurs with short cases, long, deep seated bullets and presses with long die threads. An extended shell holder or our Ram Extension is used to solve this problem.
Extended shell holders are available but they are made for only a few cartridge heads.
Our Ram Extension allows you to make any shell holder into an extended shell holder.

   

1. Select the appropriate shell holder for the cartridge you are working with.
2. Slide the shell holder into the top or female end of the Ram Extension.
3. Use a 3/16 hex wrench to tighten the set screw in the center of the Ram Extension locking the shell holder in and centering it.
4. Slide the lower or male end of the Ram Extension into the top of the press ram as you would a regular shell holder.  
5. The Ram Extension raises the shell holder .750 inch so you will need to raise the micrometer top of the Easy Seater Die by this same amount.



                Instructions for use of a
        POWDER COMPRESSION STEM
                         with the
EASY SEATER STRAIGHT LINE SEATING DIE

The micrometer feature of the EASY SEATER STRAIGHT LINE SEATING DIE allows easy return to previously recorded bullet seating depth. This same feature allows precise adjustment of the amount of compression of the black powder charge so that the charge will exactly fill the volume under the seated bullet. This feature also allows the powder compression stem to be exactly returned to a previously recorder compression depth. 

The powder compression stem should never be used to compress charges of smokeless powders. Black powder should be compressed slowly to avoid any compression heating and possible detonation. Operating the press slowly will help to avoid damaging the cartridge case if it is not properly aligned with the compression stem as the stem starts into the case mouth. Consult published loading data for information on the charge weight and amount of compression for the cartridge you are loading.


Installing the Powder Compression Stem

1. Screw the micrometer top off of the Easy Seater die.
2. Slide the spring off of the bullet seating stem and unscrew the seating stem from the micrometer top using a 3/32 hex wrench through the 1/8 inch hole near the top of the stem.
3. Clean the bottom of the micrometer top and the shoulder and threads of the powder compression stem
4. Screw the Powder Compression Stem into the bottom of the micrometer top and tighten the thread lightly with the hex wrench.
5. Screw the micrometer top back into the Easy Seater body and adjust to the desired height.
6. Depending on the particular cartridge, load, and amount of compression, you may be able to leave the seating guide sleeve in the Easy Seater body to help guide the case over the seating stem. If the guide sleeve bottoms on the set screw in the back of the die body it will start to crimp the case mouth. Loosen the set screw and drop the guide sleeve out of the die body and continue without the guide sleeve.
